Entry Requirements

Applicants must normally hold an approved bachelor degree or equivalent qualification from an approved tertiary institution.

Graduates already with a Bachelor of Education or Master of Teaching are specialised into English as a Second Language (ESL)/Languages Other than English (LOTE).

Students are strongly encouraged to check employment requirements and conditions with potential employers before enrolling in a TESOL course.

IELTS (Academic): 6.5 Overall with 6.0 Speaking, 6.0 Writing, 6.0 Reading, 6.0 Listening;
TOEFL iBT: 79 Overall with 18 Speaking, 21 Writing, 13 Reading, 12 Listening;
Pearson PTE Academic: 58 Overall with 50 Speaking, 50 Writing, 50 Reading, 50 Listening;
Cambridge C1 Advanced: 176 Overall with 169 Speaking, 169 Writing, 169 Reading,169 Listening;
Occupational English Test (OET): 300 Speaking, 300 Writing, 300 Reading, 300 Listening; Duolingo (Up to and including Semester 2, 2024): Overall 105-110

Course Details

This course is aimed at the development of skills in the area of TESOL. It is also designed to facilitate the development of disciplinary knowledge in the area of Second Language acquisition, as well as specific knowledge in the area of Teaching English as a Second Language.

The combination of theoretical knowledge and teaching methodology combine to equip prospective TESOL practitioners with tools for classroom practice.

The flexibility of delivery of the four topics in the Graduate Certificate TESOL will cater for the following groups:

  • graduates who do not have a formal teaching qualification and wish to teach English as a Second Language
  • qualified teachers who require specialised knowledge in TESOL
  • qualified teachers of other subjects which are taught using English as the language of instruction.

This course aims to:

  • explore current theories in second language acquisition
  • investigate classroom issues related to Teaching English as a Second Language (ESOL)
  • equip learners with the basic tools for teaching ESOL.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  • analyse critically current theories in second language acquisition
  • review and analyse classroom issues related to teaching ESOL
  • demonstrate an understanding of second language teaching methodologies, including the ability to communicate them to a range of audiences
  • implement second language teaching methodologies to generate approaches to a range of classroom teaching scenarios.
