Where are you from and what are you currently studying, and at which institution?

I’m from Vietnam and I’m currently in my first year of studying Nursing at Flinders University. I moved to Australia in 2019 after finishing Year 8 and completed the rest of my high school at Unley High School in Adelaide.

What has your timeline in Adelaide looked like?

Since arriving in Adelaide, I’ve been quite active in various school clubs and sports teams. During high school, I played for the badminton and volleyball teams and was also part of the prestigious Debating SA competition, where our team finished in the top 5. I also had the privilege of being an international student ambassador for South Australian Government Schools

In Years 11 and 12, I took on leadership roles in the Student Voice Council, organising charity events and initiatives like promoting sustainability and recycling. Alongside my academics, I volunteered at a local nursing home, which inspired me to pursue a career in healthcare.

I received multiple awards for academic excellence during high school, including recognition from StudyAdelaide and Unley High School.

What motivated you to choose Adelaide over other Australian cities for your studies?

I had the opportunity to visit Brisbane and Sydney as part of an exchange tour, but I found their tropical weather and hustle and bustle weren’t quite right for me. I wanted a place with a more laid-back lifestyle that reminded me of my hometown of Can Tho. A family friend who had a daughter studying in Adelaide recommended the city to us, and when I arrived, I instantly fell in love with the beautiful weather, relaxed atmosphere and stunning natural surroundings.

Adelaide felt like the perfect fit.

How did you select your course and institution, and what support services have helped you during your studies?

I’ve always known I wanted to work in healthcare, but I wasn’t sure in what capacity. After speaking with my parents, my high school career adviser, and representatives from South Australian universities, I realised that nursing would be the right path for me.

During a university tour, I was drawn to Flinders University because of its campus, supportive environment and resources. The university's student services, especially those focused on career guidance and personal development, have been really helpful throughout my studies.

What has been a highlight of your student journey in Adelaide so far?

A memorable experience for me was being recognised with the Highly Commended Academic Excellence Award from Study Adelaide and the Academic Excellence Award from Unley High. But beyond academics, it’s been incredibly rewarding to contribute to the community through volunteering, particularly at the nursing home, where I found a deep sense of connection with the residents, who reminded me of my own grandparents.

If you were to take a friend on a day trip around Adelaide, where would you go and why?

On a hot day, I would take them to one of Adelaide’s beautiful beaches. The crystal-clear waters and stunning sunsets make for a perfect day out. On cooler days, I’d explore the scenic Adelaide Hills, visiting charming villages like Stirling, Hahndorf, and Crafers, or heading to Cleland National Park and the Mount Lofty Summit for incredible views and fresh air. Where are you currently working, and what are your future aspirations?

I’m currently working as an Assistant in Nursing (AiN) with the South Adelaide Local Health Network, primarily at Flinders Medical Centre. I also have a casual position at Oasis, the community well-being centre at Flinders University.

In the future, I aspire to become a Paediatric Nurse. My dream is to work in a role that combines my passion for healthcare with my desire to make a difference in the lives of children.
